1) Choose the right form 📝
DS-11 (in person): first-time adult, minors, or if you don’t qualify for mail-in renewal. Don’t sign until the clerk tells you.
DS-82 (by mail/online pilot): adults who meet renewal rules; you mail it yourself—postal staff won’t review it.
Pro move: print forms single-sided; double-sided isn’t accepted.
2) Gather your proofs 📜 + 🪪
Bring proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., certified birth certificate) and a current photo ID, plus photocopies (8.5″×11″). The official “Apply in Person” page spells out acceptable docs.
3) Get a compliant photo 📸
One color photo, taken in the last 6 months; face forward; no glasses; white/off-white background; no filters/AI edits. If you’re renewing online, check the digital file rules, too.
4) Check timelines ⏱️
Current posted processing times are 4–6 weeks (routine) and 2–3 weeks (expedited). Add ~2 weeks for your packet to arrive and ~2 weeks to get your passport back after printing—plan travel accordingly.
5) Calculate fees 💳
Use the official fees page and fee chart to estimate your total (passport book vs. card, adult vs. minor, routine vs. expedited).
6) Make the appointment 📍
Find an acceptance facility (post offices, libraries, clerks of court), then schedule—USPS appointments are about 15 minutes per person. Some sites offer on-site photos.
7) Submit the application ✍️
For DS-11, apply in person and sign when instructed; the agent sends your packet to State. For DS-82, you mail it yourself using a trackable method (don’t use private carriers to PO boxes).
8) Track your status 🔎
Opt-in for email updates and check the online status system; your application may show “In Process” about two weeks after acceptance. The status page also explains “additional info needed” holds.

Many countries’ entry systems only accept M/F markers. If your passport has an X, confirm your destination’s acceptance before you book.
